Physical Therapy

Department Staffing

The Physical Therapy Department is staffed by licensed physical therapists (PT) and licensed physical therapy assistants (PTA). The physical therapy assistant is always under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist.

Services Provided

Assessment/Planning
The physical therapist is responsible for the evaluation and treatment of gross motor skills that are necessary for students to perform and participate to their maximum potential within the educational setting. Evaluation findings indicate areas that are necessary for functional skill acquisition, such as gross motor development, both in school and the community at large.

Treatment
Treatment sessions and their frequency are determined on an individual basis. They can also be provided as co-treatment with other related service staff (i.e., occupational therapy, speech therapy). Direct treatment may take place within a therapy room, classroom or special activity area to facilitate the collaborative process. Physical therapy services are also provided to students using a consultative model. This model of service provision utilizes the physical therapist as a classroom consultant to provide relevant information to the collaborative team.

Therapy Approaches
The following therapy approaches are utilized by the Physical Therapy Department based on the needs of each student.

  • Neurodevelopmental Treatment Techniques (NDT)
  • Myofascial Release
  • Developmental Treatment Model
  • Functional Skill Training
  • Compensatory/Habilitative
